When I visited Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia in November, I was impressed by the Art Museums of Williamsburg. We tend to focus on the living history aspect of Colonial Williamsburg but the museums are very well done and should be included in anyone's visit.
In 2020, they opened the 65,000 new and expanded space. It houses the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum has the country's leading collection of American folk art, including over 7,000 objects from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum houses an impressive collection of British and American decorative arts from the 17th through the early 19th centuries.
The spaces are open and well-laid out. Labels are interesting. Seating options are quite good. And they have an attractive shop and a cafe with many options. They have both permanent exhibits and short-term changing exhibits.
